In order to enjoy your RV travels, you have to do some planning ahead of your trips to ensure that you’ve taken care of every eventuality. One area that can be challenging to figure out is how to take care of the health of yourself and your family on the road.

f you’re living full-time in your RV or you travel frequently for long periods of time, you’ll need to have health insurance that can cover accidents, illnesses, and emergencies wherever you choose to roam. Here are our tips on finding appropriate heath coverage as an RV traveler.

The Need For Coverage

If you’re younger and you don’t have chronic health conditions, you may wonder why you might ever need health care coverage while you’re traveling. However, you never know what might happen: you could end up in a traffic accident or injure yourself while hiking or become very sick out of nowhere. Health insurance helps to cover the costs of doctors’ visits, hospital stays, and prescription medications. It’s very risky to go without it!

Applicable Plans

If you’re employed, your current coverage may be applicable outside of the area where you work, so it’s a good idea to check with your health insurance provider to see what types of coverage you can get while traveling.

If you’re a freelancer or self-employed, you’ll likely have to check out your options on the Healthcare.gov marketplace. Comprehensive coverage is better than catastrophic coverage, but if this is all you can afford, then go for the catastrophic so you’re at least covered in a major crisis.

Where to Get Coverage

Check out websites like RVInsurance.com to see what options are available in your state. Sometimes, if you’re a full-time RV traveler, it may be a good idea to change your state of residence to one that is more permissible to travelers in terms of health care coverage. You can also look through the government’s options at Healthcare.gov or check with your existing insurance provider.

Liberty HealthShare and Samaritan Ministries are 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations that can pool members’ money to use towards health care costs, so this is an alternative option if you don’t want to go the traditional route. It has its limitations, including not being applicable to pre-existing conditions and having a cap on the amount of money you can draw from the fund.
